Jet lag hits, and so does this memory from our travels to Tokyo & Kyoto, Japan—on what some people might refer to as a girl’s trip, but here at Hysterical Female we like to call a Rage Retreat (or The Hysterical Female World Tour 2024 for when we need to feel like boss ladies…snake it ‘til you make it!). Here’s Morgan, photographed by Anna, at Shisen-dō, a Buddhist temple in Kyoto also known as the Hall of Immortal Poets. Noted for its stillness and tranquility, we couldn’t quite place the emotions it stirred in us.
We asked ourselves…
“What is this feeling, fervid as a flame?
Does it have a name?
Yes,”
…zen!
Dare we say these two hysterical females felt zen?! We deeply identified with Ishikawa Jozan, the samurai-turned-poet who left the shogunate behind and built Shisen-dō, his “hermit’s retreat”, in 1641.
We came for the quiet. We stayed for the alluring “thwack!” of the shishi odoshi.
Serenity is sacred, but so is speaking up.
Quiet mind. Loud tote.
